Climate extremes and vulnerable regions

Global climate change causes extensive alteration of the climate at regional level, where extreme events have a major effect, especially in certain vulnerable regions. These phenomena may be combined with problems of pollution.

Today there is therefore a need to improve climate prediction tools so that they are detailed enough to provide an accurate description of such extreme events (heat waves, droughts, flooding, hurricanes, etc). The methods to be developed are based not only on the statistical description of small-scale extreme phenomena, but also on regional and global climate models. Improving assessment of the impacts and risks associated with such extreme events is also desirable, and this research will benefit from the study of past climates. Lastly, the theoretical analysis of extreme events (statistics, dynamic systems, etc) should be encouraged.
