Laboratories
The Climate-Environment-Society consortium relies on the expertise of 16 research laboratories in the Paris area, five of which have joined forces within a federative structure focused on the environmental sciences: the Institut Pierre Simon Laplace.

LISA: Inter-University Laboratory of Atmospheric Systems -Research at LISA, which concentrates on understanding how atmospheric systems work, is centred around two main areas: the study of the chemical composition of gases and particles in the terrestrial troposphere in connection with environmental problems (especially air pollution), and the organic physical chemistry of planetary environments in connection with the field of exo/astrobiology. |

UFR PIFO: Medical research laboratories of the Paris west area -This Training and Research structure brings together a clinical research unit and eight laboratories whose main research areas are: epidemiology, skin cancers caused by the environment, diseases of the respiratory tract, elderly people, pregnancies and premature births, mental illnesses, and metabolic diseases. |

CIRED: International research Center on Environment and Development -CIRED is primarily interested in the unintentional effects of human activity, resulting from the interaction between such activity and the natural and manmade environment. Its studies involve modelling the links between market functioning, technical choices, land use types and public policy. The scientific emphasis in this field is currently on climate change issues, in which the team has built up internationally recognized expertise over the past fifteen years. |

IPSL: Pierre Simon Laplace Institute -IPSL studies changes in the climate, the greenhouse effect and the ozone layer, as well as air and marine pollution. Joint activities are set up to meet national priorities such as climate research, impact of human activity on local and regional scales, and planetary science. |

ESE: Evolution, Systematics, and Ecology -The ESE research unit concentrates its research on ecology and evolution. Three of the four departments in this unit are studying the effects of atmospheric and climate change on semi-natural ecosystems and/or the mechanisms that alter the flux of greenhouse gases in such ecosystems. |

LSCE: Climate and Environment Sciences Laboratory -Work at LSCE focuses on three research areas: the study of the mechanisms of natural variability of the climate on different time scales, and the interactions between human activity, the environment and the climate; the study of the processes at work in the cycles of key compounds such as carbon, greenhouse gases and aerosols, which interact with the climate; and geochronology and analysis of geomarkers, based on a range of techniques applied to the study of the past and present geosphere and its relationships with the climate. |

BIOEMCO -Bioemco is a multidisciplinary research unit which aims to develop the analysis of the structure, functioning and dynamics of environments and of continental, terrestrial and aquatic environments. To do this, the unit uses the wide range of expertise of its members to combine physical, chemical and ecological approaches. |

REEDS : Research in Ecological Economics, Eco-innovation & Tool Development for Sustainability -C3ED is focusing on the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic dimension, the social dimension and the environmental dimension, treated as an interdisciplinary field that deals with issues of justice, ecological equilibrium, well-being and survival of societies in all their global diversity (and interdependence). |

LATMOS: Atmospheres, Environnements and Spatial Observations Laboratory -LATMOS is a new research unit created in January 2009, from the merge of the Aeronomy Service (SA) and the Centre for the Study of Earth and Planets Environments (CETP). |

LOCEAN: Laboratory of Oceanography and Climatology -Research at LOCEAN is centred around three areas: the dynamic processes at work in ocean circulation, the study of the role of the ocean in the mechanisms that govern change in Earth's climate system, and climate predictability and coupling between ocean processes and biogeochemical cycles. |

LPMAA: Molecular Physics Laboratory for the Atmosphere and Astrophysics -LPMAA's research thematic is molecular physics and its applications in atmospheric sciences and astrophysics. |

SISYPHE -Work at SISYPHE looks at the water cycle and the cycles of elements transported by water in catchment basins, integrating their surface and underground components. More specifically, the issues tackled concern: water resources and their management; the biochemistry of continental waters; human impacts; hydrological and archaeological applications of geophysical exploration; energy resources and storage of waste (including CO2). |

CECO: Laboratory of Econometrics of Ecole Polytechnique -Research carried out at the Laboratory of Econometrics are centered around three areas: mathematical methods (optimization, game theory), public economics (voting analysis, normative economics, economic philosophy, environmental economics, urban economics, international economics), and business and markets (industrial economics, organization theory, risk prevention and crisis management). The laboratory takes part in the work of the Chair for Business Economics (which is in particular undertaking a project on industrial competitiveness and climate-related policies) and of the "Sustainable Development" chair. |

LMD: Laboratory of Dynamic Meteorology -The laboratory focuses on the mechanisms, evolution and prediction of meteorological and climate phenomena. Its three research areas are: the study of the interaction between the various components of the climate system; the detection and understanding of change and natural variability in climate, on scales ranging from seasons to decades; and the study of the global effects of human activity on the environment. |

Centre Alexandre Koyré -Centre Alexandre Koyré (CAK) for the history of science and technology Research and teaching at the CAK include the history of mathematics ; physical sciences and technoscience ; the human sciences and medicine ; science, knowledge and globalisation ; the environment, climate and development ; actors, institutions and governance ; biology and natural history ; and the earth sciences. It also focuses on sources and archives in the history of science. The Centre’s research stretches mainly from the early modern period to the present. Broadly, two major approaches or perspectives guide its work : the one seeks to grasp the past in its singularity, while the other strives to give historical depth to the present. Regardless of the period in which the researchers specialize or of the speciality to which they belong, e.g. history, sociology, or epistemology, the research done at the CAK-CRHST aims to increase our understanding of science, knowledge and technology in society in historical perspective. This gives the Centre its thematic and methodological coherence. |
